Moko Jumbies at The Deep End

Some nights on St. Croix feel extra special, and Friday night at The Deep End is definitely one of them. During our May trip, we made our way back to this tried-and-true favorite for dinner, drinks, and one seriously unforgettable show. The Deep End’s Caribbean Night brings together crowd-pleasing island energy, PuraFire’s fiery performance, and the incredible Guardians of Culture Moko Jumbies, a troupe dedicated to preserving the Afro-Caribbean art of stilt dancing in the Virgin Islands.

If you have never seen Moko Jumbies perform in person, put it on your St. Croix must-do list. Towering above the crowd in bright, beautiful costumes, they move with a mix of grace, rhythm, balance, and pure joy that makes the whole evening feel like a celebration. The music pulls you in, the dancing keeps you smiling, and the talent on those stilts is absolutely amazing. We try to catch them at least once every trip because it never feels like “just another show.” It feels like being welcomed into a living piece of Virgin Islands culture.

What makes the performance even more meaningful is the history behind it. Moko Jumbies are more than entertainers; they are cultural symbols with roots in West African tradition and a long-standing place in Caribbean celebrations. Their height on stilts represents guardianship and protection, and groups like Guardians of Culture help keep that tradition alive for future generations through performance, teaching, and community pride.
